Today I Throw Off the Shackles of Women's Lib and Become a Domestic Goddess

Meet Large Marge, the newest member of Dye Candy Fabrics. She is my new Ironrite 85 Rotary Iron (also known as a mangle).  This Ironrite 85 mangle dates back to the late 1940's or early 1950's. It runs like a dream and is in excellent condition for an appliance that is more than 60 years old.  It also came with the Ironrite Health Chair.  What a great bonus!

Fabrics are fed across the ironing surface with the muslin covered roller. The roller is controlled by knee lifts under the unit.

There is definitely a learning curve involved but I read my trusty manual and was assured I would improve with time:  "A little patience is required in learning to operate the Ironrite Ironer the first time.  When one irons, even with the hand iron, the first items that are ironed are never as well done as when one has practiced and become familiar with different garments.  This procedure is much like the first cake baked by the bride; the cake becomes better as she becomes more familiar with the recipe. So does her ironing become better as she becomes familiar with her Ironrite."

Once I got the hang of things I was able to iron 90 yards of fabric in about 4 1/2 hours, Yipee!  These fabrics are for a new quilt I am be putting together for March quilt shows.  I will have kits available once the top has been completed.

I am looking forward to all the joy's my new Ironrite 85 promises!  As for the domestic goddess part, I am having a great time dyeing and ironing.. the cooking and cleaning will have to wait.

But seriously, I decided to invest in a mangle last year when I started having severe muscle and joint pains from all the ironing I was doing.  I can't tell you what a difference this product is making for me.

New Earthtones colorway available in my Dye Candy Shop.

Dye Candy Fabrics are dyed on cotton fabrics that were manufactured in the USA.

I have used one of these... My aunt and uncle had a resort in Minnesota and when we were visiting I ironed sheets with one of these. I am sure it is a great addition for you! Love, love my fabric I received last week, thank you!

Chris, how in the world did you discover this treasure?

It's amazing that you acquired the entire 'set'. How comfortable is the chair?

Yes, I am envious ! ! !

Funny....In a jet-lagged stupor, I bought the same thing (used obviously) last summer!!

There's a video on Youtube I think....or somewhere....of using an ironrite mangle. It's a funny period piece for sure! (I needed the video, because I don't have a manual with my mangle.)

Enjoy!!!

Believe it or not I have used one of these! When I was kid in the 60's my Mom worked at a private nursing home in an old Victorian house, on the weekend we kids would go with her
and "help" the staff ( really they were keeping an eye on us while my Mom did her nursing). I got to run pillow cases through the mangle...the workers did all the sheets too! I thought it was the coolest thing then and now to think of using with my quilting fabrics.....brilliant. I hope you have many happy hours mangling :0)

Happy Sewing
