Work in Progress

Currently on my design wall is a lap quilt I am making for my husband. The pattern is from Villa Rose Designs. Most of the batiks are from Cozy Quilts.  I spent the last Saturday in May volunteering at the shop and ended up coming home with enough fabric to make this quilt and a really fun Minkee type of fabric for the backing.

My husband is always cold.  Six years ago I made him a hand dyed flannel quilt stuffed with batting and a Minkee backing.  He has used it so much it is falling to shreds.

This time I thought I would use a better quality fabric in hopes the quilt will last longer.  I also decided to skip the batting.  The colors were chosen to coordinate with our newly painted and carpeted living room.

Wishing you all a Happy Independence Day!

Monochromatic Challenge

Spring Green
Created by Chris Daly
June 2012

This 12"x12" quilt was made for the Art Quilts Around the World Monochromatic Challenge.  See all the other challenge quilts here.

I love hiking through the woods in springtime when the colors are brilliant yellow greens and the sunlight filters through the trees new with leaves. This quilt is inspired by images I keep in my mind all year round.

I hand dyed these fabrics using a lemon lime base in various amounts.  The darker greens were made by adding black to the dye stock.  Fabrics were applied with a glue stick using raw edge applique.  All of the quilting was done with a smoke colored mono-filament thread from YLI.

Please note, glue sticks are not reliable for a permanent hold.  I only use glue sticks in my work when I will be  stitching my fabrics in place shortly after use.  If you have to transport your work before stitching I would recommend using a permanent fusible web product like Heat and Bond or Wonder Under.

Sorry to be silent for so long.  All of my travel this spring left me with very little time for my husband, sewing and exploring our wonderful woods.  For sanity sake a few things had to go on the back burner.  I spent the month of June getting my house clean and organized... and I have been sewing again.  In addition to my Spring Green quilt, I finished quilting this quilt and two other quilt tops.  I will post photos of these projects soon.  The months of July and August will be filled with fabric dyeing as I get ready for the Quilt Expo Show in Madison this September.

I hope you are all enjoying a wonderful summer or winter depending on where you live.  Greetings from Wisconsin where we are praying for rain!
